Húsvéti ünnep
Easter Monday is the day following the main celebration of Easter Sunday, which is a public holiday in Hungary. In the Christian church, this day does not hold particular significance, but in folk tradition, many customs and symbols are associated with it. The most well-known of these are the sprinkling and egg painting.
The sprinkling is another name for Watering Monday, which refers to the practice where boys and men sprinkle girls and women with water or cologne on this day. This expresses their wish for health, fertility, and beauty for them. In return for the sprinkling, they receive a red or decorated egg or chocolate. The origin of the sprinkling is very old, with written sources mentioning it as early as the 17th century. The belief in the purifying and renewing power of water is the basis of this custom.
Egg painting is also an ancient tradition in Hungary, dating back to pre-conquest times. The egg symbolizes life and rebirth, thus playing an important role in spring celebrations. The eggs are decorated using various methods: they are painted, dipped, scratched, patterned with wax, or glued with stickers. The most common color is red, which symbolizes the blood of Jesus and love. The eggs are given as gifts to each other or hidden for children.
Easter Monday is a joyful and colorful celebration that combines Christian and pagan traditions. On this day, people rejoice in the resurrection of Jesus and the arrival of spring.
